A team of students from Nottingham Trent University won the first prize in the 5th ICC International Commercial Mediation Competition hosted by the ICC in Paris. Professional mediators with a diverse range of expertise (including current and former members of the CMC board) participated as volunteer mediators and judges.
The Nottingham Trent University team of mediation advocates won a thrilling final (February 10th) against the University of New South Wales, beating teams from all over the world. Osgoode Hall School of Law from Canada came third. This was a unique event gathering teams from law schools and mediation experts from around the world: 44 law schools from 18 countries and almost 100 professionals participated, with 35 nationalities represented in the contest.
The seven mock cases in the contest concerned international commercial disputes, ranging from intellectual property to distribution problems and complex commercial issues related to the organisation of a charity concert. The aim of the competition was to "train lawyers to better meet the dispute resolution needs of today's cross-cultural market".
Sir Henry Brooke commented: " This is thrilling news. It demonstrates
clearly how mediation is now reaching deep into legal professional
education. The CMC and others must build on this. We have extended an invitation to the winning team to attend our annual conference in May, and we very much hope they will accept."
